Storytelling

Storytelling has been part of every human culture. Even the earliest cave art worked with a narrative. Humans have an inherent love for stories because they help us make sense of the world and ourselves. Brain scans reveal that reading fiction enhances brain areas associated with socialising and empathy – allowing us to simulate experiences and find common emotional ground. This skill played an important role in helping humans learn how to cooperate as they began to form larger communities. By looking at how storytelling evolved and how our brains use stories to connect with other people, understand themes, and resolve conflict, we can see why storytelling is so powerful.

This explains why storytelling is such an important leadership tool that can help to foster understanding and trust, by enabling leaders to share their own stories authentically, and create compelling, shared visions. Leaders who can clearly communicate their vision are more likely to retain and recruit the best team members.

At LEXi, we use storytelling techniques to help participants develop their communication skills and enhance their individual style. Stories add emotion to the narrative, making it easier for others to relate. Furthermore, many argue that human memory is inherently story-based, making us more likely to remember a message conveyed through storytelling.

When approaching a presentation through storytelling, facts gain meaning, and messages are given a visual dimension accessible to all. The storytelling techniques we teach include:

  • Structuring your narrative effectively
  • Creating dramatic tension
  • Adapting your story to suit your audience and occasion
  • Using your voice and body language to connect with your audience
  • Employing breathing techniques to manage nerves
  • Adding humour for maximum impact

By harnessing storytelling skills, leaders can influence and inspire, engage and reassure, and pull a workforce together to share a vision or goal. This powerful skill can build morale and create a dynamic, inclusive culture.

Our storytelling offering is designed to be innovative, interactive, and tailored to the personal and professional growth of our participants.
